First Impressions

The Ma’al are dark skinned (say Egypt or central African) humanoids with lean with thick chorded muscles, and their glowing green eyes and no hair at all. They also have lobeless and pointed ear. In any clan, a Ma’al will be given elaborate tattooing – red if they are a warrior, green if they are tribal leaders, orange for psychics, blue for magic users and white for mages. These tattoos are easily recognized by outsiders. It is possible that a Ma’al serve his clan as a warrior but if they take a leadership, his tattoos from that part of his life will be mostly green. These tattoos can reveal the type of person an outsider might be dealing with.

In ages past, the Ma’al were the only people in the whole of the lands. There were low tribes all over the Highlands, but the Ma’al treated them as slaves and cattle with no opposition.

Physique and Psyche

Arcane Methods
The Ma’al are nothing if not practical. Few Ma’al become actual magi, but they tend to learn individual arcane abilities that are learned specifically to aid them in their daily lives. Of course, for most Ma’al that means mind control, hypnosis, illusions, and fear-based cantrips. But if a Ma’al does indeed progressing into the arts of a magi, they make for powerful kisamancers and kraeomancers.

On Spiritual Natures
Unlike the Divine entities that were prominent in day-to-day living, the Ma’al still hold sway to the eldest entities, the Beyonders, and specifically the Hman-Iala known as Hgorinarthu the Deep Within. In their meditations they focus tremendous psychic power from other realms of reality, such powers that for all intents and purposes make the Ma’al immortal.

Allies and Antagonists
The Ma’al have no relationship with any other mien unless there is a history of abduction or terrorism. Most times, folk attribute the Ma’al as lore and myth. Fortunately, the Ma’al are quite fine with that notion. But there are a few Ma’al who find their racial predilections abhorrent. When this happens, the individualistic Ma’al is hunted down and killed. Such Ma’al might travel to the surface to survive.

Exploration Motivations
Most of the Ma’al will only show an interest in surface live for three reasons: spotting for slaves, collecting common instruments and tools to maintain the their Oer research, and looking for possible religious conversion. Of course, there are exception to these rules, but there is an equal chance that the exception is in fact a long term agent to discover the strength and readiness so that the Ma’al can take lands by force.
